Award Winners!

Each year, with the support of our industry partners, a hard working practice manager is singled out to receive the AVBA’s coveted Business Manager of the Year Award. This year Medfin Finance jumped on board in recognising the value of creating champions and hereos within the veterinary industry and after careful consideration, Renata Gianchou from Canberra Veterinary Hospital (CVH) was chosen to exemplify what being a real-life manager in the veterinary world is all about.

Nominated by her peers for her high level of commitment and accountability, for not only herself but the team she manages, Renata was completely shocked when her name was read out as the winner of this year’s award at the AVBA’s annual dinner in Melbourne. “It was an absolute honour to not only find out that I was nominated, but then to actually win was a total surprise,” Renata admitted. When asked to comment on why she was chosen as this year’s recipient, Renata suspects that it may have been her attitude that got her over the line. “I am a very positive person and very passionate about my role within the hospital. Having been at Canberra Veterinary Hospital for 18 years, I have seen the hospital grow and have been able to provide the level of care that all animals and their owners deserve. I also wish for our staff to feel and have this same passion also.”

Even though Renata has been described as an irreplaceable part of the furniture at CVH, she hasn’t let her many years at the practice provide for complacency. “A manager’s role can be very demanding and you are required to wear a number of different hats. From making rosters, recruiting, developing policies and procedures, coaching and developing staff, to general maintenance, these are all areas that I am involved with and still very passionate about.”

The award, which has been recognising excellence in practice management for the last four years, attracts a growing number of entries and this year was no exception. “The award process gets, without a doubt, more difficult every year,” said Loren Murray, AVBA office manager. “To get nominated by your colleagues is not only an accomplishment to be proud of, but a testament to the standard of work each of our applicants consistently displays. Although it’s great to recognise hard work, picking a winner is not something I enjoy doing…it gets harder each year,” said Loren.
